Art Supermarket
Collecting art does not have to be a hobby reserved only for the rich thanks to initiatives like the yearly Art Supermarket and boutique run by a shop called American Prints. The supermarket, which even features trolleys, offers paintings, drawings and sculptures ranging in price from 89 to 249 Euros by a group of thirty upcoming and established artists. Alternatively, the boutique offers larger format works at a higher price.

Jazz
Barcelona Jazz Festival
Jazz fans are in for a real treat thanks to the Voll-Damm International Jazz Festival, which will be bringing some of the top names currently working in the genre to Barcelona. Who could resist the prospect of seeing Bitches Brew session players pianist Chick Corea and guitarist John McLaughlin together on stage? Not to mention gigs by Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés and Israeli Bassist Avishai Cohen with his Eastern Unit.

Enduro Indoor International
Barcelona’s Palau Sant Jordi arena is all set to host the second round of the Enduro Indoor World Cup competition, which will bring together some of the world’s top professional riders, including Mika Ahola and Iván Cervantes in a form of off-road motorcycling that fuses motor cross and trial biking on an obstacle filled circuit.

H&M at Portal de l’Àngel
Swedish fashion chain H&M are expanding their network in Barcelona with the opening of a new store at the city’s main commercial hub, Portal de l’Àngel. Housed in an emblematic 19th century neo classical building and decorated in collaboration with Estudio Mariscal, led by Javier Mariscal, the new store will offer fashion for everyone and even a personal shopper service, on three floors covering 1,700 square metres.

Literary Barcelona
The boom in historical novels has given rise to a new way of exploring the city. Writers like Carlos Ruiz Zafón (‘The Shadow of the Wind’) and Idelfonso Falcones (‘The Cathedral of the Sea’) have all sought inspiration in the streets and squares of Barcelona, and literary tours, focussing mainly on the Gothic Quarter, now exist to help visitors get to know the reality behind the fiction.

Mariza
Born in Mozambique and settled in Lisbon since the age of three, Mariza dos Reis Nunez shot to fame in 2001 with the release of Fado em Mim, an album that made her the leading name in Portugal’s most characteristic musical genre. Since then, Marisa has successfully incorporated different sounds and styles, ranging from jazz, Cuban music and even flamenco.

Simple Plan
Following in the wake of bands like Blink-182 and, of course, Green Day, Canadian band Simple Plan have taken advantage of the current musical context to cultivate a legion of fans, mostly teenagers, who identify with their eminently MTV marketable blend of calculatingly wasted punk aesthetics and three chord, angst ridden melodic pop songs. On Saturday they will be presenting their third album.

World Press Photo 2008
The most important touring exhibition in the world of photojournalism is returning to Barcelona’s CCCB contemporary culture centre with a selection of the greatest photographic images of 2007. All of the photos on display, which include everything from portraits to images of current affairs and entertainment, were selected from among the 5,000 images competing in ten categories of the World Press Photo Competition.
